How to Cash a Canada Post Money Order

How to Cash a Canada Post Money Order thumbnail
A Canada Post Money Order is a safe way to make a payment to an individual or business.

Canada Post issues, for a fee, money orders for payments to an individual or to a business. Once you have established that a money order is legitimate, by ensuring the document contains the features required by law, it is easily transferable into cash. You need only to visit a Canadian bank and either deposit the money order into your bank account, or be serviced by a customer service representative who should be able to cash the instrument.

Instructions

Obtain the money order. Examine the document to ensure it is a valid Canada Post money order. If the money order is for an amount in Canadian dollars, it will be peach in color. If it is for an amount in U.S. dollars, it will be green.

Check to ensure both the sender and the payee's information are on the money order. This element is required by Canadian law.

Ensure the money order's security features are present. These include two beaver-shaped watermarks which can be seen when you hold the money order up to the light. You will also see micro printing on the front bottom of the money order which will read as either a series of letters, specifically CPCSC; or the words CANADAPOST/POSTECANADA. Also, the writing on the back of the money order is made up of fluorescent fibers, which can be seen under a UV light.

Further ensure the money order is valid by establishing that it is valued at no more than $999.99 in U.S. or Canadian dollars. The validity of a money order amount can also be checked by calling 800-563-0444, Canada Post's dedicated number for this purpose.

If you suspect the money order is counterfeit, report the incident to your local police force and bring the document. If you are satisfied that the money order is legitimate, you can proceed to cash it by going to a bank. You can either deposit it directly into a bank account, or if you choose, have a customer service representative at the bank convert it into cash.
