Learn how to silver stain glass.

Silver nitrate, more commonly known as silver stain, is a material used to stain the back of a piece of stained glass. You apply this stain after coloring the front of the glass to give your colors an opaque and interesting background. You will need to have access to a glass kiln, because that is how you set the silver stain. You fire it until the glass is hot enough to absorb the stain into the glass.

Instructions

    • 1

Dampen the backside of the glass with a cloth where you want to apply the silver stain.

    • 2

Blend the silver stain in a small bowl according to the manufacturer's directions, using a badger brush.

    • 3

Dab the silver stain onto the glass with the badger brush. You can control how dark or light the stain will appear by applying a thicker or thinner layer of stain.

    • 4

Place the glass, with the silver stain facing up, into a glass kiln and fire it at between 550° and 560° Celsius.

    • 5

Wash your badger brush straight away to keep the stain from destroying the bristles.

Tips & Warnings

  • The tone of the silver stain will alter with repeated re-firings, so plan your painting, staining and firing in advance.

  • Firing times can vary from 10 minutes to several hours, depending on your type of kiln.
