How to Install Security Bars
Security or burglar bars block the window openings of your home. Proper installation ensures that the burglar bars remain intact and keep burglars out of your home. When deciding on the type of burglar bars to install, keep in mind leaving escape routes accessible for you and your family in case of a house fire or natural disaster. In some areas, only hinged burglar bars are allowed by code. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the vertical height of the opening section of the window with a tape measure. Divide the measurement by two to find the center of the window opening. Measure up from the window sill with a tape measure and mark the center line of the opening on each side of the window frame with a pencil.
-
2
Place two marks one inch in from the interior wall corner of the left side of the window with a carpenter's pencil.
-
-
3
Center the left guide rail on the vertical height mark with the edge of the guide rail facing the room aligned with the one-inch pencil marks. Mark each mounting hole on the window frame with a pencil.
-
4
Pre-drill a hole at each marked location with a 5/32-inch drill bit secured in a 3/8-inch drill motor. Align the holes on the left guide rail with the pre-drilled 5/32-inch holes. Run one supplied mounting screw into each hole with a square-head (Robertson) screwdriver.
-
5
Repeat the previous steps to secure the right guide rail to the right-hand side of the window frame.
-
6
Pull the hinged guide rail (left or right side depending on the manufacturer) toward the room.
-
7
Slide the security bar assembly into the hinged guide rail. Secure the security bar assembly to the hinged guide rail per the manufacturer's assembly instructions. Close the security bar. Adjust the height and width locations by turning the adjusting screws with a Robertson screwdriver.
-
8
Tamper-proof the Robertson screws with the materials supplied by the security bar manufacturer to complete the installation.
