How to Make a Snowboard Rack

How to Make a Snowboard Rack thumbnail
Make a wooden snowboarding rack to store the boards during the off-season.

Snowboarding is fun in the winter months when the snow is fresh and deep. But when the season has come to an end, it is time to store the snowboards away in the garage or the basement. Instead of placing them up against a wall, where they can fall and scratch one another's surfaces and wax bottoms, make a homemade wooden snowboarding rack. It is easy and simple to make and can also be used for skis.

  • Dowels
  • Pencil
  • Measuring tape

Instructions

    • 1

Decide how many snowboards the rack will hold. Account for 6 inches per snowboard with board bindings when determining the length of the lumber. Purchase the lumber required, along with the wooden dowels. Purchase two dowels for each board you use.

    • 2

Measure the lumber so it is 6 inches tall and 1 inch thick. Decide on the length of the snowboarding rack and measure its length on the lumber. When deciding on the length, add the measurements of each dowel. For example, if the rack needs to hold seven snowboards and the dowels measure 1 inch in diameter, the total length of the rack needs to be 50 inches, plus an additional 2 inches (1 inch on each end of the rack).

    • 3

Make marks with a pencil that indicate the chosen measurements. Cut the lumber to this size using a saw and sandpaper the edges smooth.

    • 4

Place the lumber plank down on a flat surface once it has been cut and prepared. Measure 1 inch in from one end and make a mark. Measure another inch and make another mark. Measure another 6 inches and make a mark. Measure another inch and make a mark. Continue this 6-inch/1-inch pattern until you reach the end of the wooden plank.

    • 5

Drill holes in each of the 1-inch sections you made. Use a drill that is just slightly smaller than the 1-inch drill head. Do not drill all of the way through the wooden plank, but stop about when you're about ¾-inch through.

    • 6

Apply glue in each of the holes drilled and push a dowel in each of the holes. It will be a tight squeeze, but it will be more sturdy once complete. Use the hammer to gently tap each dowel into each hole. Set the rack to dry overnight, if possible.

    • 7

Decide on the location and height of the rack by using the longest snowboard available. Place the board straight up against the wall and install the rack so its top edge lines up with the top of the snowboard. Make a mark on the wall.

    • 8

Locate the wooden beams in the wall before installing the rack. Use a stud finder, if necessary. Before using a mechanical screwdriver to secure the rack, make sure it is leveled. Mount the snowboard rack on the wall with screws that will reach the wooden beams in the walls. Use at least two screws to mount the rack to make sure it is sturdy. Do not hesitate to add more screws for extra strength.

    • 9

Hang the snowboards on the rack by folding the bindings so they are flattened to the board. Hang the snowboard up with a dowel on each side, so one dowel holds the board up underneath one binding, and the other dowel supports the backside of the board.
