How to Color Placemats
Colored placemats are vivid additions to a dining room table or bar area and decorating them is an enjoyable craft. Placemats come in different sizes from small kid-sized to larger adult-sized mats. Whether coloring placemats to decorate a table for a festive party or just needing some tabletop protection, personalize and color your place settings.
Things You'll Need
- Wax paper
- Yardstick
- Pencil
- Sharp scissors
- Towel
- Ironing board
- Iron
- Crayons
- Large resealable storage bag
- Mallet
- Cork placemats
- Stencils
- Contractors tape
- Craft paint
- Foam plate
- Sponge paintbrush
Instructions

Crayon Placemats

Pull out two equal sizes of wax paper. The placemats should be 18 inches high and 2 feet long. Use a yardstick to make the measurements and mark the lengths with pencil.

Cut the wax paper with sharp scissors.

Lay a towel on a table or ironing board. Heat up an iron on the low or warm setting.

Place broken, peeled crayons in a large resealable storage bag. Smash the bag with a mallet, crushing the crayons.

Lay one piece of wax paper on the towel. Sprinkle the crayons on the wax paper. Place the second piece of paper on top of the crayons.

Place the iron on top of the wax paper, rubbing it gently back and forth. Do this until the crayons melt.

Let the wax paper cool. Trim the ends of the wax paper placemat with sharp scissors.
Painted Cork Placemats

Buy plain cork placemats.

Arrange stencils on the placemats. Tape them in place with contractors tape.

Squirt a teaspoon of craft paint on a foam plate.

Dab the sponge paintbrush on the paint. Tap the sponge brush on the plate to remove the excess paint.

Sponge the paint into the stencil. Allow the paint to dry for a full hour before using the placemat.

Tips & Warnings
Make an exciting pattern by laying the stencil side by side and painting it in.
