How to Convert .Mov Files to WMV for Free

The Apple QuickTime Movie (MOV) and Windows Media Video (WMV) formats are compressed video formats developed by Apple and Microsoft, respectively. Macintosh operating systems typically use the MOV format, while Windows operating systems typically use the WMV format. You can easily convert MOV files to the WMV format with a media converter. There are a variety of media converters available--some of the most popular include MediaCoder, Quick Media Converter HD and Format Factory, each of which is free to download and use.

Instructions

MediaCoder

1. Download and install MediaCoder (see the link in the Reference section below). Click the small button labeled "..." at the top right of the main window to set the output destination for the WMV files.

2. Click the "Video" tab at the bottom left of the main window, then choose "WMV" in the drop-down menu.

3. Add the MOV files to the project by clicking the "Add File" button (labeled "+"), then browsing for the desired files. Once all of the MOV files are added to the project, begin the conversion by clicking the "Start" button.

4. Open the output folder by clicking "Open" at the top right of the main window to find the new WMV files.

Quick Media Converter HD

1. Download and install Quick Media Converter (see the link in the Reference section below). Open the "My settings" menu at the top of the main window and choose "Folders settings." Click the "Videos Directory" button to set the output destination for the WMV files.

2. Click the Windows Media Player icon--which looks like a generic "Play" button--in the "Conversion Format" pane. Choose the second option, "Windows Media Player Format (.wmv) Custom Resize," to set the output format to WMV.

3. Add the MOV files to the project by clicking the "Add files to convert" button (labeled "+") at the left of the main window, then browsing. Once all of the MOV files are added to the project, begin the conversion by clicking the "Start Conversion" button (which looks like two arrows) at the bottom of the main window.

4. Click the "Output Folder" button to find the new WMV files once the conversion is complete.

Format Factory

1. Download and install Format Factory (see the link in the Reference section below). Click "Video" in the left pane to display the video options, then select "All to WMV." A new window will pop up.

2. Click "Browse" in the new window to set the output destination to a folder of your choosing.

3. Add the MOV files to the project by clicking the "Add File" button at the top right of the new window, then browsing for the desired files. When all of the MOV files are added to the project, begin the conversion by clicking "OK," then clicking "Start" at the top of the main window.

4. Click the "Output Folder" button to find the new WMV files once the conversion is complete.
