Birth certificates are considered public records, and every birth in the United States is registered with the Division of Vital Records. To find a birth certificate online, all you need to do is search the Vital Records database. However, without basic information such as the name on the certificate, the state of birth, date of birth and names of the parents listed on the certificate, it will be impossible to locate a birth certificate.

      Visit the Vital Records Web site and choose the "Birth Certificate" option. Select the state in which the birth was registered.

      Choose the "Order Online" option and click on it. Enter the name of the person listed on the birth certificate, the names of both parents listed, including the mother's maiden name, the date of birth, state of birth and whether the person listed on the birth certificate is still living. If you don't have all of this information, you can't find the birth certificate online. You must send a written request to the Division of Vital Records.

      Enter your payment information and choose a shipping method to have a copy of the birth certificate mailed to you.
