How Do I Know What Speed RAM to Add to My Computer?

Knowing what speed (in megahertz, or MHz) your RAM is can help you determine what type of RAM to install in your computer, whether you are replacing or upgrading your RAM modules. Looking at the physical RAM modules in your computer is one of the best ways to find out what speed your RAM is.

Things You'll Need

• Phillips screwdriver

Instructions

1. Shut down your computer and unplug it.

2. Open the case of the computer with a Phillips screwdriver. Desktop computer cases usually open on the side once you unscrew the side of the case. Laptops typically have a panel underneath them that unscrews to reveal the RAM modules.

3. Spread apart the metal clips that hold the RAM modules in their slots and then remove them.

4. Look at the sides of the RAM modules for their speed, written on a sticker or directly on the RAM chip.

Tips & Warnings

• Handle the RAM chips by the edges to prevent damage to them.

• Periodically touch the metal interior of the computer case while you are working on it to ground yourself and prevent static discharge into the RAM, motherboard or other parts of the computer.
