How to File Folders

How to File Folders thumbnail
File folders come in a variety of colors.

Filing folders in a distinguishable order will make placing and relocating important documents much easier. A good filing system will streamline your storage system and save you time and money replacing originals. Whether using your file folders in a home office or business, files tucked away in these paper containers will keep them safe and neat looking. Create an alphabetical file system that is simple for anyone to use.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your file cabinet. Place the file rack inside the cabinet. You may have to adjust the size of the rack by turning the corner screws.

    • 2

Place the overhanging folder holders in the cabinet inside the file rack. Spread them out. You should have 26 overhanging folder holders, one for each letter of the alphabet.

    • 3

Label the overhanging folder holders by inserting tabs in the plastic tab holders. Label each folder a different letter from A to Z using an ink pen. Arrange the overhanging folder holders in the cabinet in alphabetical order.

    • 4

Name your individual file folders. If naming files after a person, write the last name first then a comma, then the first name. Print the name legibly.

    • 5

File the folders behind the letter tab of the appropriate file folder holder. For example, file a folder named "Smith, Mary" under "S." File a folder labeled "Gas Bill" under "G."

    • 6

Place documents in your file by removing the file, and laying the most current document in the front. Close the file and return it to the appropriate folder.

    • 7

Scan through files periodically to insure no papers are crumpled or misplaced.
