A treasure chest is a fun and simple craft you can cherish for years. A treasure chest can be hidden at the end of a scavenger hunt revealing a prize or stored in a closet or under a bed to hold treasures and trinkets. Plan carefully and put the necessary time and effort into your treasure chest to ensure that it holds up for a long time.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a simple box with a lid to build your treasure chest around. A shoebox is an ideal box to work with as it is inexpensive enough to make several or to start over if necessary. Your box may be made of cardboard, wood or any material that will hold up and can hold glue and paint.

Separate the lid and the box. Paint both pieces a shade of brown to resemble wood, or cover in contact paper that resembles wood. Make sure you cover the entire surface neatly as most parts of the box will be visible, excluding the bottom of the chest.

    • 3

Make notches to resemble hinges using colored duct tape, paint or contact paper. These notches should match up when you put the lid on the box. First attach the notch to the box, then place the lid on the box to line up where to put the corresponding notch. Use a picture of a treasure box that you admire to decide how many of these decorative hinges to make.

Cut a small circle the size of a treasure chest lock and paint it gold or cover it with gold contact paper. Use a black permanent marker to draw a keyhole in the middle. Glue your lock onto middle of the front of your box lid, so that half of it hangs over the actual box when the pieces are together.

Paint any finishing details you wish. You may want to make the fake wood look more weathered, or draw a skull and crossbones on the side of the box.

Keep your treasure box in a safe place where no one can steal your loot!
