Making Advent Wreaths for Kids

Making Advent Wreaths for Kids thumbnail
Make your own Advent wreath with your kids this year.

Children become anxious and excited as Christmas approaches, and you may be looking for a project to keep them busy during Advent. An Advent wreath is traditionally placed on a table surrounding four candles, one for each week of Advent. You can create a kid-friendly Advent wreath this year and celebrate "lighting" the candles each week before Christmas. There are no actual open flames, so the project is safe for children of all ages.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper plate
  • Scissors
  • Green construction paper
  • Pencil
  • Clear tape
  • Pink construction paper

Instructions

    • 1

Fold a paper plate in half and cut the center out of it. Unfold it to produce a paper ring. This will be the base of your wreath.

    • 2

Trace your child's hand onto green construction paper eight times. Cut the hands out with scissors.

    • 3

Tape the hands to the paper plate ring with clear tape so that the fingers point outward and the palms face the center of the ring.

    • 4

Roll three sheets of purple construction paper into 1-inch-thick tubes, and use clear tape to secure them. Do the same with one sheet of pink construction paper.

    • 5

Apply a bead of glue around the rim on one end of each paper roll. Place the rolls onto the paper ring, over the palms of some of the hands. Space the rolls evenly.

    • 6

When it's time to light a candle, stuff a sheet of yellow tissue paper into the candle tubes to create "flames."
