Instructions

    • 1

Measure your grill with a tape measure. The brick cover should surround your grill and create a tabletop along one or both sides for a prep area. Draw a detailed sketch of your grill stand on graph paper and draw the outline of the structure on the concrete with chalk.

Dry-set four to five rows of brick, without mortar. This will help you determine if the size and dimension will work. Remove the loose bricks.

    • 3

Apply a ½-inch-thick bed of mortar to the bottom and sides of each brick in the first row, or course, using a trowel. Set the bricks firmly onto the foundation. Use a level to check your work.

    • 4

Set the second row, staggering the bricks by aligning each joint directly above the center of the brick below. This will require a few half bricks. Set a chisel at the halfway point of the brick and tap the end of the chisel with a bolster hammer. Continue laying bricks in this method until you get the correct height. The top of the brick should line up with the door hinges on the back of your grill.

Cut a piece of solid surface like granite, stone tile or slate with a hacksaw to match the dimensions of your prep areas. Apply mortar to the top of the bricks and set the counter in place. Allow the mortar to dry completely.
