How to Convert an Existing Mattress Into a Pillowtop

Pillow top mattresses increase your comfort with an extra padded layer on top. This layer usually consists of foam or fiber. Manufacturers of pillow top mattresses usually charge a considerable amount over what you would have to pay for a conventional mattress. However, it is possible to obtain this comfort without having to pay an exorbitant amount. All you need is a pillow top mattress pad. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a pillow top mattress cover for your mattress. Like pillow top mattresses, pillow top mattress covers have a thick layer of padding for the top of your mattress. These covers are available in twin, full, queen, king and California king sizes.

    • 2

Strip the mattress of covers, sheets and pillows. The mattress should be completely bare.

    • 3

Place the pillow top pad on the mattress and secure it to the mattress if possible. Some pillow top pads are shaped like bed sheets and have elasticized corners that will fit snugly around the corners of your mattress and some have elastic bands. Mattress pads with neither of these features should remain in place under your bed sheet.

Cover the mattress pad with a bed sheet. Ensure that the sheet is deep enough to fit the new height of the mattress. If not, you can purchase sheets designed for pillow top mattresses. In "Flip! For Decorating: A Page-by-Page, Piece-by-Piece, Room-by-Room Guide to Transforming Your Home," Elizabeth Mayhew recommends sheets labeled "High Profile" or "Deep Pocket" because they can stretch from 12 inches to 18 inches.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is best to flip your mattress regularly so that both sides can wear out evenly. You can do this when you have a removable pillow top mattress pad but this is not possible with one-sided pillow top mattresses.
