Make a Walking Stick

Walking sticks are easy to do and only require a few basic materials and creativity on your part. They are not only helpful when hiking on trails to brush away bushes and shrubs but are useful to retain balance as well. Walking sticks could also be sold on flea markets for a simple, part time money-making venture.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a stick that is of the right length, ideally the length above your waist to your feet. Indent your fingernail on the wooden stick. If it leaves a moist mark, choose another stick as walking sticks have to be completely dry for proper stiffness.

    • 2

Strip off the bark using a carving or pocket knife. It would be ideal to let the stick dry further after this procedure, especially if there is still a hint of moisture on the wood. Let dry for 3 to 7 days.

    • 3

Use sandpaper to smooth the surface. You can start using fine sandpaper and finish using very fine until a smooth finish is achieved.

    • 4

You can now insert and secure the pre-made grip on the top of your walking stick. You could also use rope or leather braid to lash the top of your walking stick. Secure firmly using glue or knot tie when applicable.

You could paint or add decorations on your walking stick for a personalized look. Remember to finish the tip of your walking stick. A pointed tip is preferred for snow and muddy terrain while a broader point is ideal for tarmac, gravel and sandy surfaces.
