Instructions for Making Bean-Filled Heating Pads

Instructions for Making Bean-Filled Heating Pads thumbnail
Beans make a great filler for microwaveable heating pads.

Many people use heat to treat their aches and pains. Instead of using an electric heating pad, which not only has to be close to a wall outlet but can pose a fire hazard, try using a microwaveable heating pad. These bean-filled heating pads heat quickly in the microwave and stay warm for quite a while. They can be used anywhere and can also be placed in the freezer and used as an ice pack.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a cotton fabric and filler to use for your heating pad. You can purchase fabric or use scraps such as old socks, washcloths or towels. Dry beans make a good filler for the heating pad. Uncooked rice, cherry pits, feed corn and oatmeal can also be used.

    • 2

Cut and sew the fabric into the size and shape that you wish. Leave an inch or two open to use for adding the filler. Fill the bag about a half to three-fourths full. Do not overfill, as this will keep the heating pad from forming around you. Sew the bag closed with the needle and thread.

    • 3

Place the heating pad in the microwave for one to three minutes depending on the size of the bag. Do not leave the heating pad unattended while it is heating in case the filler starts to smoke or catches on fire.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can choose to add herbs or scented oils to your filler before placing it in the heating pad.

  • You can make a soft cover to place on the heating pad after it has been microwaved.

  • Place a small bowl of water in the microwave, or lightly spritz the heating pad to keep it from getting too hot.

  • Do not microwave any fabric that is not cotton.
