Choose the best colors for you.

Have you ever seen someone wear a particular color that looks amazing on them...then you try on the same color only to find it washes you out completely? Or perhaps you try to dye your hair a dark brown and discover that you look terrible. The problem isn't necessarily the shade of color, it's most likely your skin tone. There are two "tones" of skin: warm and cool. If you can determine whether you're warm toned or cool, you can then choose the best colors and shades to complement your skin tones so you'll always look fresh, bright and glowing.

Instructions

Determine whether you're warm-toned or cool-toned. Warm tones are people with skin tones of yellows or golds. Cool tones are people with skins tones more pink or blue. One way to tell whether you're warm or cool is to take a look at your veins. If your veins appear green, you're warm-toned. If your veins appear blue, you're cool-toned.

Select the right hair color. Warm-toned people should stick with warm hair tones. This can include dark brown, red, strawberry blonde or natural golden blonde. For cool-toned people, select cooler hair colors. This can include jet black, blue black, ash brown, platinum blonde or ash blonde. Although these are just guidelines, they are important. For example, warm-toned people can rarely pull off platinum blonde because it washes them out, making them look gray. Check the base of the hair color for an indication of its tone.

Select the right makeup. Warm-toned women tend to look best in neutrals, browns, yellows, greens and reds. Try a neutral eye shadow with dark brown shadow in the crease. Line your eyes with dark brown eyeliner and use dark black or brown mascara. Use a light peach blush to accentuate your cheek bones and a light, coral gloss on your lips.

Cool-toned women look best in pinks, purples, blues and greens. If you have blue eyes, use a light blue shadow with dark blue in the crease. For green eyes, use a dark--almost brown--green as an all over shadow. Line your eyes in black eyeliner and use a super black mascara on your eyelashes. Dust your cheeks with a light pink blush and gloss your lips with a bright shade of pink.

Wear the right clothing. Wearing the right color will make your skin look bright and make your eyes pop. Wearing the wrong colors will make you look drab and washed out.

Warm-toned people should stick to neutral colors and earth-tones. Colors such as gold, brown and olive will bring these tones out of your skin, giving you a glowing look.

Cool-toned people can wear gem tones--blue, red, pinks and purples. Stay away from yellows and golds, which can wash you out.
