How to Install Microsoft Windows on a Macintosh Computer

The Apple website points out the many ways that Macintosh computers are compatible with Windows. You can install and run Microsoft Windows on a Mac in several ways, depending on your needs. In order to install Windows using any method, you need to obtain a legal copy of Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a virtual machine on your Mac using Parallels (see Resources) and install Windows on it. This application creates a computer within your computer, allowing you to install Windows and run that operating system while you are running OS X. Parallels has a number of different display modes, including the "Crystal" mode in which Windows is integrated into the OS X Desktop.

    • 2

Install Windows on a separate partition of the Mac using the Boot Camp utility (see Resources). This utility divides your computer's hard drive into two or more partitions. You are able to install Windows on the separate partition and start up the computer as a Windows PC.

Install Windows on a virtual machine created with the free application VirtualBox (see Resources). This open-source application does not have all of the features included with Parallels, but it performs the essential functions of running Microsoft Windows. Although VirtualBox is free, you still need a legal copy of Windows.
