Directions to Make Loom Potholders

Loom-woven potholders make a great gift for someone who enjoys cooking. Loom-woven potholders also make a good project for the beginning weaver, and experienced weavers can use them to make color and pattern samples before beginning a more complicated project. The possibilities for loom-woven potholders are limited only by your imagination.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a loop over the first peg on one side, then hook the loop over the first peg on the other side. Repeat with the second pegs, then the third, etc., until all the pegs on those two sides are full. These loops are called the warp.

    • 2

Thread the weaving hook through the warp loops. Send the hook over one loop, under the next, and so on. Do not pull the hook all the way through the warp yet.

    • 3

Hook a new weaving loop over the hook. Pull the loop through the warp loops. Do not pull the loop all the way through the warp.

    • 4

Put one end of the loop over the first peg on an empty side, and the other end of the loop on the first peg on the opposite empty side.

    • 5

Repeat the last two steps on the second pegs, third pegs, etc., until the loom is full.

    • 6

Pull two adjacent loops off the pegs, starting at a corner. Use the hook to pull the second loop through the first loop.

    • 7

Pull a third loop off, next to the second. Use the hook to pull the third loop through the second loop.

    • 8

Continue until all the loops have been pulled off the pegs and pulled through the previous loop. You will be left with a single loop that sticks out, the last loop.

    • 9

Pull the last loop through the previous loop a second time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wrap rubber bands around the ends to keep the warp loops from popping off the pegs.

  • Experiment with different colors and patterns to make colorful potholders in exciting patterns.

  • Do not try to force loops that are too small for your loom. Doing so may damage your loom.
