How to Make Diaper Wreaths & Diaper Cakes

Turn a stack of newborn diapers and a pacifier into a stunning baby shower gift.

Diapers may not be the most impressive gift on a shower registry but they are a practical and necessary item for the parents-to-be. If you want to make sure the parents have plenty of diapers, you can make your gift more impressive by sculpting a diaper cake or making a diaper wreath. Both items serve as gifts and baby shower decor as well. As an added bonus, they do not need to be wrapped.

Instructions

  1. Diaper Wreath

    • 1

Cut two 6-inch lengths of ribbon from your spool with scissors and set them aside.

    • 2

Open a diaper and wrap it around the side of the wreath long-ways. Overlap the front end of the diaper and the back end to tighten the diaper around the wreath.

    • 3

Secure the diaper with a 6 inch length of ribbon, knotted over the overlapped area. The side with the overlapped ends and knotted ribbons will be the back of the wreath. Repeat this process for each of the 10 diapers so the entire wreath base is covered in diapers.

    • 4

Tuck a baby rattle under one of the ribbons that is securing a diaper to decorate the wreath.

    • 5

Tuck a sprig of baby's breath under each ribbon that secures a diaper.

    Diaper Cake

    • 6

Unfold 56 diapers and roll them from front to back into small tight rolls. Secure each with a rubber band directly across the center of the roll.

    • 7

Place an 8 ounce baby bottle upright on a table and stand it in the center of a cardboard cake board.

    • 8

Stand six of your rolled diapers around the bottle so they surround it completely. Stand them upright.

    • 9

Stretch a rubber band around the diapers and bottle to hold them securely in this formation.

    • 10

Stand 12 diapers around the perimeter of the first diapers to make the layer larger. Stretch a rubber band around them to hold them around the first layer of diapers and the bottle.

    • 11

Stand 20 diapers around the layer of diapers to make it larger again. Stretch a large rubber band around the entire layer to hold it in place. Your first layer should look like a bottle surrounded in rings of upright rolled diapers. The bottle will stick about halfway out of the layer.

    • 12

Stand six rolled diapers around the part of the bottle that sticks out of the first layer and secure them with a rubber band. This will begin your second layer.

    • 13

Stand 12 rolled diapers around the second layer to make it larger. Secure it with a rubber band.

    • 14

Decorate your diaper cake by wrapping each layer in a strip of 1-inch wide ribbon to cover the rubber bands. Secure the ribbon by tying it into a bow. Choose a color of ribbon based on the gender of the baby or the theme of the baby shower.

    • 15

Lay rattles, pacifiers and teething rings on the cake to decorate it and add more to your gift.
