How to Sew a Replacement Canopy

Consider using a netted fabric for your canopy to create an exotic feel.

Bed canopies evoke a romantic feel, whether on a young girl's bed or in a stately master suite. While canopies, like most other home décor items, can cost quite a bit in retail settings, they are not difficult to make. Even a novice seamstress, armed with a few simple measurements, can create a unique look to suit any décor.

Instructions

  1. Steps

    • 1

Measure your bed frame, particularly the width and length of the canopy frame. If there are any height changes in the frame, such as an arch toward the middle, be sure to measure the length of the frame following that arch.

    • 2

Use these measurements when you go to the fabric store to purchase the pattern and fabric. Compare your measurements to the back of the pattern envelope, to determine how much fabric will be necessary.

    • 3

Choose a fabric that not only matches your desired décor, but that has a nice drape to it. Heavy fabrics are only recommended for valance-style canopies. For canopies designed to drape, look for lighter fabrics such as chiffon or voile.

    • 4

Wash and dry your uncut fabric in the same way you plan to launder your finished canopy. This is especially important if you have purchased any type of natural fiber such as cotton or linen, since they will shrink when washed and dried. Pre-washing and drying allows the shrinking to occur before you cut out your canopy pieces.

    • 5

Cut out the pattern and fabric as shown in the pattern directions. If your fabric has any type of design on it, be sure that the pattern pieces are turned the same way, so that the patterns line up on the finished canopy. Floral motifs should be centered between the canopy supports.

    • 6

Pin the canopy together and try it on the canopy frame. The canopy should fit snugly enough that it will not sag, but not so tight that it puts pressure on the seams. If necessary, adjust the seam allowances to get the correct fit.

    • 7

Sew the fabric pieces together according to the pattern instructions.

    • 8

Slip the sewn canopy onto the frame. You may want to stitch the canopy to the frame at the corners or where some slippage may occur. Do this by simply stitching through the fabric and around the frame. Do not pull these stitches so tightly that they distort the canopy.

Tips & Warnings

  • If no pattern is available for the style or size of canopy you want, consider using your old canopy as a pattern for the new one. Simply take it apart and use the old pieces as pattern pieces for the new fabric.

  • If your canopy is intended for a child's room, it is recommended that you use fabric rated safe for children's sleepwear. Ask your fabric shop clerk for suggestions.
