Get your hair trimmed a 1/4 to 1/2 inch every 8 weeks. Because hair grows on average approximately 1/2 inch per month this schedule will allow for some hair growth to occur, but still keep split ends from climbing the hair shaft and causing breakage. Find a hairdresser you can trust to only trim this amount to grow your hair long.

Massage your scalp daily. According to medic8.com, a health information website based in the United Kingdom, massage increase nutrient flow to the scalp by opening blood vessels. It may also contribute to stress reduction, which can induce the follicle to enter a growth phase when new hair is produced. Use the pads of your fingers to massage the scalp in a firm circular motion for several minutes to encourage optimal hair growth.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it is important to monitor specific vitamin intake to contribute to healthy hair growth. Getting enough iron, folic acid, biotin and other vitamins is necessary to promote hair growth. However, an excess of vitamin A can lead to hair loss and overuse of vitamin E may lead to breakage. Take a supplement for your age and gender to ensure you are getting the proper dosage.

Use shampoos and conditioners with polymers such as silicone to bind the hair shaft and prevent splits that may lead to breakage. Use a leave-in conditioner after in-shower conditioning to further moisturize and protect the hair from breakage.

5
Comb the hair with a pick after showering to remove tangles, and then shake to loosen hair strands. Dab leave-on conditioner on the hair and scrunch the hair by holding hair loosely in a fist and pushing it into a wave shape.

6
Apply a product such as mousse, sculpting gel, or leave-in conditioner to maintain your long hair and curl. Avoid products that contain alcohol. Alcohol can cause hair to break and could lead to hair loss.

7
Allow to your hair to dry naturally or use a blow-dryer with a diffuser to encourage more curl. To blow dry with a diffuser, flip your head upside down and "ruff up" the hair or scrunch while continuously moving the diffuser over the head. Flip back up when hair is partially dry and continue diffusing the top layers while scrunching.

If your hair has no natural curl, a body wave or perm can change your hair to wavy, curly or very curly, depending on your preference. To keep the hair long, only get a root perm to touch up the curl every 3 to 6 months to avoid chemical damage that may lead to breakage.
