Keep your pool pump running smoothly.

Pool pumps are used to circulate water by an impeller that brings the pool water into the pump. One common type of pool pump that you may use with your pool is an electric motor pump. This type of pump can be an above-ground model or an in-ground model, depending on how the pump has been installed for your pool. You can troubleshoot an electric motor pump to determine what the problem is. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Unit Doesn't Run

    • 1

Open the access panel to the circuit panel and see whether a breaker has tripped or a fuse for the pump has blown. Reset the breaker or replace the fuse and check the pump again.

    • 2

Check the timer and see whether it is set correctly. If the timer is not set the pump will not turn on.

    • 3

Verify that the power cord or electrical wires are connected to the power supply. Underground cords can sometimes become disconnected when doing landscaping in the yard.

    Pump Not Priming

    • 4

Examine the strainer cover in the pool and see whether it is loose. Tighten the cover with a screwdriver and see whether the pump begins priming.

    • 5

Remove the cover for the strainer housing and observe the level of the water. When the water level is below the housing a suction leak can occur and prevent the pump from priming.

    • 6

Examine the back of the strainer cover that you removed in Step 2. If the o-ring on the back is worn it will need to be replaced.

    • 7

Verify that the level of the pool water is sufficient to reach the pool pump. When the water level is too low the pump will not prime sufficiently.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check for obstructions that can get caught in the strainer housing and plug the pump.

  • Some pool pumps may not have a timer that you can set.
