How to Troubleshoot a Visioneer 8100 Scanner
Visioneer's 8100 one-touch flat bed scanner is no longer produced. It was compatible with Windows operating systems up to and including Windows XP Service Pack 1. Microsoft's Vista and Windows 7 operating systems were never supported. Problems with the scanner can include the computer being unable to connect, black lines or streaks down the document and other image problems like pink tints.

1
Plug the scanner into the computer using the USB ports, if the computer can't communicate with the scanner. Shut down the computer and unplug the scanner from the household outlet. Plug the scanner back in to the power after a few seconds. Restart the computer. Try the scan again.
-
2
Remove any USB hubs and make the connection directly between the computer and the Visioneer 8100 scanner. After you have verified everything works, you can go back again and plug the scanner back in through the hub. Make sure it is powered though. Try it again. If the scan fails, don't use a hub.

3
Wipe the document glass if you see black streaks in the scanned image. Open the lid and wipe the glass with a cleaning cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Wipe the white backing on the back of the scanner lid too, and then close the cover.
-
4
Re-install and repair the software if you continue to see black lines. The calibration is controlled by the driver and a corrupt driver can cause the calibration to get out of whack. Insert the disk that came with the scanner and follow the screen prompts.
-
5
Let the scanner warm up for a minute or two after plugging it in and before performing a scan, if the image has a pink or red tint.
