Herbs like turmeric can be used in food and medicine.

You may not know that the food you eat can cure physical ailments, but this is exactly the case with many herbs. One such herb is turmeric. Asian food generally features turmeric as a coloring and spicing agent, but medicinally speaking, turmeric can also have a number of positive effects. The American Cancer Society advises that turmeric can slow the growth of some tumors. Turmeric can also be mixed into a drawing salve to draw infection from boils, hemorrhoids and other such conditions.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1 Tbsp of honey to a mixing bowl. Stir in 1 tsp of turmeric powder and mix well with a spoon or other mixer.

    • 2

Add ½ tsp of ginger powder and 1/3 tsp of sea salt to the mixture and stir thoroughly. The mixture should form a thick paste.

    • 3

Apply the paste to your boil or other skin ailment. Spread a thick layer of paste over the affected area and at least 2 inches in each direction around the ailment.

    • 4

Wrap the treated area with plastic wrap, followed by a cloth or bandage. This will help to keep the mixture on the sore and stop the area from getting wet.

    • 5

Keep the area dry for two days. Wash away the mixture and check the condition; reapply the paste if necessary to continue treatment.

Tips & Warnings

  • If combined with turmeric consumption, the salve can take two to three days to treat your skin condition.

  • As with any medication, you may experience an allergic reaction to turmeric on your skin. If you are allergic to ginger or yellow food coloring, you are likely allergic to turmeric. If you suffer from a worsening of your skin condition, sudden outbreak of itching or hives, or another allergic reaction, stop use immediately and consult a doctor.

  • Turmeric salve can treat some skin ailments, but if a condition recurs, gets worse or does not fade with treatment, consult a physician immediately.
