How to Sew a Baby Doll Dress

Choose a pattern for the doll outfit. Companies like Simplicity and McCall's make doll patterns, and you can find them at fabric stores like Jo-Ann Fabrics. There are also patterns for clothes specifically designed for American Girl dolls. Patterns are sometimes available online, or you can design your own.

Trace the pieces of the pattern on the fabric you will use. Cut out the fabric and any notions, such as lace.

Sew together the pieces according to pattern instructions. Put the dress on the doll and see if it fits. If it does not fit, cut it until it does fit, using care not to cut too much. Sew on notions like ribbons and lace if you desire.

You may wish to sew very small doll clothes, such as for Barbie dolls, by hand instead of with a machine because very small clothes require more precision.
Pay careful attention to any instructions in the pattern about recommended fabrics, because some patterns work well with specific fabrics. For example, a pattern designed for knit fabric may not work well if you use wool fabric instead. Also, pay attention to instructions about when to sew the reverse side of the fabric, as this is a common cause of mistakes.
