Lexmark printer error messages display across the top of the unit.

The Lexmark X4270 inkjet printer is equipped with an LCD panel on the top of the unit to display printer status and alert the user to any problems. One potential problem is receiving the error message "Color Cartridge Missing" even though both the color and black-ink cartridges are installed. The printer is designed not to operate unless both cartridges are in place. On its product support website Lexmark notes that the problem may be a defective cartridge. Troubleshooting the error message could save a trip to the repair shop.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the printer and pull the control panel forward, then raise the plastic cover by lifting straight up from the front. The cover tilts toward the back in the upright position. Wait for the printer carriage to stop moving. The two ink cartridges will stop in the loading position near the center of the printer.

    • 2

Pull each cartridge forward and lift up to remove from the printer, then close the printer lid and control panel.

    • 3

Press the "Power" button in the upper left corner of the control panel to turn off the printer, then press it again to switch it back on. If a "1203 error" message appears on the LCD screen on the control panel, the problem is with the printer itself and repairs may be necessary. If the screen displays "Color Cartridge Missing," the problem is likely a defective cartridge.

    • 4

Pull the control panel forward and raise the lid to reinstall the two ink cartridges. The color cartridge installs in the left side of the compartment. Push each cartridge back until it snaps in place.

    • 5

Close the printer cover and secure the control panel in position. If the "1203 error" message now displays, the color cartridge is defective and should be replaced.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the ink level is low in the color cartridge, it could be sending false sensor signals to the printer. Remove the cartridge and shake it gently from side to side to redistribute the ink, then reinstall and test the printer.

  • Lexmark cautions that non-Lexmark replacement cartridges may not perform or work with all of the printer functions, including possibly triggering a "missing cartridge" error message. Even though the cartridge may be full and operating properly, the printer will not print with an error message.
