Homemade Lollipop Quilts
Patterns that develop out of your creativity make lollipop quilts a one-of-a-kind craft. You can piece together a collection of squares with colorful circles surrounding other candy-colored patterns. Or pick a plain fabric and free-motion stitch the shapes of lollipops into it. Some lollipop quilts incorporate random shapes inspired by fabrics from a manufacturer's lollipop collection.
You are the designer and how you want to relate your quilt to lollipops is totally up to you.

Lollipop Applique
-
1
Design multiple quilt blocks made up of vibrant colors and shapes appliqued onto a background fabric. Each block does not have to be the same design, but must be the same size.
-
2
Cut out a series of shapes such as circles, squares, flowers, animals, faces, toys or anything else that adds color and fun to the block. Spray the back of each piece with adhesive and place it on the background fabric you are using for the block. Applique the pieces by top stitching around the edge of each one with a satin stitch.
-
-
3
Make 1-1/2-inch-wide strips that are equal to the length of the quilt. To determine this, lay the completed squares on a flat surface. Leave 1 inch between each square. Measure how long the quilt will be and then make strips about 2 inches longer so you have room for error. Cut out enough strips to connect all the blocks together plus two strips for the sides of the quilt.
-
4
Make strips for the width of the quilt using the same method of measurement, but cut each strip to the width of each individual square. Leave two of them the full width for the outer rim of the quilt.
-
5
Arrange the squares on the flat surface, and move them around to place them in their final position. You will be sewing the long rows together. Sew one strip to the bottom of the first square with a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Sew the next square to the other side of the strip. Make sure the top of the square faces in the right direction. Continue with this until you have completed one row.
-
6
Place the completed row back on the flat surface where it was and repeat with each of the rows in order. Once they are all done, sew the long strips in between the rows in the same order they were laid out. Use the remaining four strips to complete the outside border.

7
Choose two fabrics that are colorful. They may be plain or have patterns in them. It is your choice.
-
8
Cut the two fabrics to the size of the completed quilt. Put batting in between. Pin the three pieces together about every 8 inches with quilting pins. Place the pins out of the path of where you will be sewing horizontal and vertical lines.
-
9
Machine-sew horizontal and vertical lines to secure the layers together. The lines could be up to 12 inches apart. The number will vary with the size of the quilt. Sew around the perimeter of the quilt. Binding will be added later.
-
10
Put the free-motion quilting foot on the sewing machine, and drop the bottom feeder teeth or cover them so they do not restrict the fabric motion. Sew random lollipop shapes and sizes all over the quilt.
-
11
Finish the quilt by sewing on the binding fabric.
Lollipop Fabric
-
12
Select fabric from the lollipop collection of a fabric manufacturer. Fabrics can be a combination of colorful prints, spirals, circles or any shapes. The more vibrant and zany the colors and patterns are, the more interesting the quilt will be.
-
13
Design blocks or irregular shapes to create an exciting pattern of colors. There are no rules for the design.
-
14
Complete the quilt with free-motion quilting patterns that enhance the designs on the various fabrics .
