How to Use a Divot Repair Tool

How to Use a Divot Repair Tool thumbnail
Courteous golfers repair their divots.

Divot repair tools have two prongs and are designed to repair ball marks on the green. Ball marks occur when the ball strikes the green and leaves a mark or impression on the green. Proper use of the divot repair tool will ensure a good putting surface for golfers who follow. Golf etiquette requires the golfer to repair ball marks left by inconsiderate golfers as well as his own.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the dual prongs of the divot repair tool underneath a portion of the ball mark.

    • 2

Push the depression up until slightly above the surrounding area. Continue around the ball mark until there is no longer a depression.

    • 3

Fix pushed-up areas of a soft green. Place the prongs behind the elevated surface and gently work toward the area where the ball hit until covered.

    • 4

Tamp the repaired area gently with the putter head until it is level with the surrounding surface.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have a divot repair tool, a golf tee can be substituted.
