How to Build a Queen Size Platform Storage Bed
As any ten-year-old boy can tell you, the space beneath your bed makes for an efficient storage solution. A queen-size bed measuring 18 inches high covers more than 50 cubic feet of storage space. By building a bed frame with storage options, you can take advantage of that space and save money over buying a prefabricated bed frame. Set aside an afternoon for this project, plus overnight for the paint to dry. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 2 planks, 1 inch by 18 inches by 78 inches
- 2 planks, 1 inch by 18 inches by 60 inches
- 2 plywood sheets, 3/4 inch by 78 inches by 30 inches
- Power saw
- Power drill
- Screwdriver bits
- 22 L-braces with accompanying screws
- Wood screws, 2 inches long
- 5 hinges with accompanying screws
- Sandpaper, course and fine grit
- Stain or paint
- Paintbrush

Cut your planks and plywood to the needed lengths using your power saw.

Sand all faces of your lumber with coarse grit paper.

Set one 78-inch plank and one 60-inch plank together in an L shape, with the end of the longer plank abutting the face of the shorter. Attach them with two L-braces set in the inside corner, each brace set 3 inches from either edge of the planks.

Set the other 60-inch plank against the free end of the 78-inch plank. Attach with two L-braces as before.

Slide the other 78-inch plank in between the two 60-inch planks, parallel to the first 78-inch plank and 20 inches away from it. Attach with two L-braces at each corner, as before.

Lay the plywood sheets down on top of the frame you've built, side by side, with their outer edges flush with the outer edges of the frame.

Screw down the plywood sheet resting on the open side of the frame using one wood screw for each corner. Drive the screws through the sheet and into the edge of the plank below.

Attach the other sheet to the first using your five hinges. Screw the hinges in place using the accompanying screws. Attach the screws at 6 inches, 26 inches, 40 inches 54 inches and 74 inches from one edge.

Sand the exterior faces of your bed frame using fine grit sandpaper. Paint or stain as desired.
