Windows Media Player is factory bundled with all Windows operating systems. The player is an actual component of Windows and cannot be uninstalled. However, you do have the ability to roll back to a previous version. This can be helpful for troubleshooting or in cases where there is a preference for the previous version.

Instructions

      Windows XP: Click on "Start," then on "Run." In the run box type "Control," and press "Enter."

      Windows Vista/7: Click on the "Start" button. In the search box type "Control," and press "Enter."

      Windows XP: Click on the "Add or Remove Programs" icon.

      Windows Vista/7: Click on the "Uninstall a Program" link under the "Programs" icon.

      Windows XP: Click the "Show Updates" check box at the top.

      Windows Vista/7: Click the "Show Installed Updates" link on the left.

      Windows XP: Scroll down to "Windows Media Player," and then click the "Change/Remove" button.

      Windows Vista/7: Double-click on "Windows Media Player."

      Click "Next" to proceed with the rollback. Restart your computer when prompted.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are permanently rolling back. You can also delete the Windows Media Player 11 runtime files, which are also in the "Add\Remove Program" list.
