It's simple to put money in someone else's bank account.

There may be situations where you have to deposit money into someone else's bank account. Whether you're doing it for a friend, a family member or a relative, putting money into the person's bank account is as simple as putting money into your own bank account. If it's a local bank, all you need is the individual's personal information: name, address and bank account number. But if the deposit is to be made to an international or faraway bank, then you must use a wire transfer.

Things You'll Need

  • Account holder's personal information
  • Check or cash
  • Deposit slip
  • Bank's information (for wire transfer only)

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what type of funds are to be deposited: check or cash. If it is a check, make sure that the check is made payable to the individual in whose account you want to put the money. Otherwise, the check will need an endorsement signature on the back. If the check has in fact been made payable to that exact person, you can simply write "FOR DEPOSIT ONLY" in the endorsement section on the backside.

    • 2

Write the individual's name in the "Pay To" section of the check, fill in the amount of the check in numbers and words, include a memo (if needed), sign the check and write "FOR DEPOSIT ONLY" on the back.

    • 3

Get all of the personal information needed to deposit the funds into the person's bank account. This information includes the individual's name, full address and bank account number. Also ask the person whether the account is a checking or savings account.

    • 4

Go to the nearest branch of the bank and fill out the deposit slip with all of the personal information and the amount of the funds to be deposited.

    • 5

Go to the teller and deposit the funds. If asked, let the teller know that you're making the deposit into someone else's bank account--not your own.

    • 6

Get the funds wired to the other person's bank account if the deposit entails an international transaction. You can have the funds wired directly from your own bank account, or you can write out a check to that person. In this case you must get not only the personal information about the person, but also all the details about the bank: name, location and phone number. With all wire transfers, a specific code is used to identify each bank, such as the SWIFT code or IBAN, depending on the system that your bank uses for wire transfers. Therefore, you must also find out the code(s) for the bank where the deposit is to be made. To complete this transaction, you must go to your bank's local branch and have the wire transfer ordered. In certain cases you can also do a wire transfer online or over the phone.
