How to Care for a Dieffenbachia Plant
The dieffenbachia plant is also known by the name dumbcane. It is a large, leafy tropical plant with striated leaves that contain a white coloration. In warmer climates, the dieffenbachia can be grown outdoors but in most climates the plant is a houseplant. Although the plant is a beautiful addition to the household decor, it is extremely toxic to humans and animals. It contains high levels of calcium oxalate, which causes suffocation if ingested. 1
Place the dieffenbachia in a location that has bright sunlight for the majority of the day. Do not allow the sunlight to fall directly on the plant, as it can burn the leaves. Dieffenbachia plants that are in shady or semi-shady locations will fail to thrive.
-
2
Place the dieffenbachia in a location that maintains a temperature of between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Outdoor plants can take nighttime temperatures above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, though between 60 and 65 degrees are ideal. Dig up outdoor plants and place in a plant pot once the nighttime temperatures fall below 50 degrees Fahrenheit in the fall or winter.

3
Water the plant once per week until the soil is completely saturated and slightly soggy. Do not water again until the soil is completely dry to 1 inch below the top of the soil. You can test the soil dryness by sticking your finger down into the soil.
-
4
Purchase a liquid plant fertilizer and dilute the recommended amount on the packaging by 50 percent with water. Pour the liquid fertilizer into the soil at the base of the plant. Apply the fertilizer once every other week starting in spring and continuing through the end of summer.
-
5
Wipe off the tops of the leaves of indoor dieffenbachia plants once per month with a damp sponge. This prevents the pores on the leaves from becoming clogged with debris.
