How to Remove Decals From a Pinball Play Field

Pinball is an arcade-style game where one or more players try to accumulate points by manipulating a series of metal balls over a play field located inside a pinball machine. The player that scores the most points and keeps the balls in play the longest is deemed the winner. The play field of the pinball machine contains the graphics and obstacles of the game. Decals add decoration to the play field and become worn overtime due to contact with the metal balls. These decals can be removed and restored using a few common items found at most hardware stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Tap out the plastic insert portion of the decal. Many pinball games include a painted decal surface along with inserts that add additional text to the visual appearance of the game. Place a piece of felt over the insert (to prevent damage to the insert) and then place the small wood cylinder over the insert and felt. Tap the wood cylinder with a hammer. The insert will pop out.

Peel the surface of the decal on the pinball play field using a razor blade. Many decals are painted onto the surface of the play field. Angle the razor blade at 45 degrees or less to get under the decal. Angling the blade close to the surface also prevents gouges and cuts into the play field.

Sand the decal down using a piece of fine sandpaper (P240 or P1200 grit). Continue to sand the surface until the decal is completely removed and the surface is smooth.
