How to Pick the Right Size Golf Clubs
The right size golf club makes all the difference in the comfort level of your golf game. Many first-time players think that when you buy golf clubs, you're stuck with one particular size. Although there is a standard club size, you can go to a golf supply store and be fitted for just the right clubs that suit you. It's similar to being fitted for a suit, except it can be slightly more hi-tech.

Getting Started
-
1
Find a golf supply store in your local town. Ask to make sure the store does fittings for golf clubs.
-
2
Visit the store and talk to an employee about being fitted. See if they have a golf simulator that allows you to try out golf clubs in a virtual environment, which calculates your swing speed and the angle you hit the ball.
-
-
3
Talk to your fitter salesperson about your golf game and whether you play at the professional level, play only moderately well or just do it as a hobby. All this information and the information from the simulator can help the fitter find a golf club that works for you.
Old-Fashioned Fitting
-
4
Ask the salesperson to fit you using the old-fashioned method of a tape measure to help get a more accurate fitting. Wear a pair of ordinary street shoes when being fit this way. Make sure the shoes have a lift of no more than 1 inch.
-
5
Stand with your feet about 12 inches apart and your arms at your side. Be sure your shoulders are relaxed.
-
6
Allow the salesperson to use the tape measure to measure the distance between your wrist and the floor. This measurement is the most important way to determine the length of your golf club. If you're right-handed, the fitter will measure your left wrist to the floor. If you're left-handed, your right wrist will be measured.
Trying Out the Clubs
-
7
Try out the golf clubs the salesman chooses for you if the clubs are available the same day. The simulator is a good place to test them out or in a special area the store provides to test golf swings.
-
8
Request any changes you might want if the golf clubs don't feel comfortable to you. It's no different than when you buy a suit and you find the fittings didn't really provide exactly what you wanted. Measurements sometimes need adjustments.
-
9
Ask the golf supply store if you can borrow the golf clubs and take them out on a real golf course so you can see how they work during a game. Practice in the store if they don't agree to this out of fear of damage. However, one way the store can prevent damage is by putting a protective tape over the club face so you won't have to worry. This won't affect how well the clubs work.

Tips & Warnings
The standard length of most golf clubs is 44 inches. But if you're a woman, remember to subtract one inch. After the wrist to floor measurement, a golfer who's six feet tall will generally need a golf club approximately 42 inches long.
Allow time for you to get used to using the new golf clubs. Even after you buy them, you may need weeks or months of use before you get a true comfortable feel so you can play a successful game of golf in confidence.
