How to Fix a Kenmore Washer Drum

How to Fix a Kenmore Washer Drum thumbnail
Fixing your Kenmore washer is easy with a few simple steps.

The Kenmore washing machine is usually very effective at washing clothes. However, if your washing machine seems to have a lot less power and isn't cleaning very well, you will need to inspect it. Typically, problems do not arise in the actual tub of the washing machine unless the tub is over twenty years old.

If your machine isn't spinning then the problem is probably the washing machine belt. However, if the water isn't draining from your tub, then your problem is with the drain tube. Checking these two devices is easy and will not require a repairman. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Start off by unplugging your Kenmore washing machine from the wall outlet in your laundry room. Pull the unit away from the wall so you have enough room to work.

    • 2

Take a screwdriver and remove the back panel of the washing machine. There will be around 10 screws that you will have to remove to do this. Pull the panel off of the washing machine and set it away from your workspace.

    • 3

Find the drive belt in the washing machine. This will be on the lower left-hand side of the inside of the unit. Take the belt off by sliding if off of the pulley and then off of the washer drum.

    • 4

Look over the belt. Even the smallest crack or tear can impede the spinning of the washer. Replace the belt with your new one.

    • 5

Check the draining tube if the water isn't draining from the washer tub. Turn the water supply spigot to the right to turn off the water coming into the washer. Disconnect the supply hoses from the washer by turning them to the left.

    • 6

Use a towel or an older piece of carpet to move the washer out of your home without scratching your floors. Pick up the washer and place the carpet or towel under the unit. Put it on the back patio or on your front lawn.

    • 7

Disconnect the draining tube from the washer and let the water pour out of the tub. Check the draining tube for pieces of clothing such as socks that are stuck. These can be sucked through the washer sometimes with a Kenmore model.

    • 8

Replace the draining tube in the washer and move the washer back into your home. Reconnect the back panel and the supply hoses to the Kenmore washer. Turn the water supply spigot to the left to turn the water back on.

    • 9

Test the washer by running a wash with no clothes. Make sure the washer is spinning and that the water drains from the tub after the wash is done.

Tips & Warnings

  • Separate each piece of material you take off or out of the unit so you can put the washer back together properly.

  • Consult the manufacturer if the washer continues to give your problems.

  • Never work with an appliance that is plugged into an electrical outlet.

  • Electrical shock can seriously injure you or be fatal.

  • Keep pets and small children away from the workspace. Small parts can be swallowed and cause serious injury.
