Aviation law is a collection of laws related to the operation, construction or disposition of air crafts. These laws are derived from federal regulations, state and local statutes and common law. Aviation law is a subject that is helpful for all pilots, aviation employees, aircraft owners and aviation business owners. There is an easy and straightforward process to learning basic aviation law.

      Study the Federal Aviation Regulations. The Federal Aviation Regulations, or FARs, are laws that were enacted by the Federal Aviation Regulation, National Transportation Safety Board and Transportation Security Administration to ensure safe and secure flight operations. An excellent book to study from is the Federal Aviation Regulation / Aeronautical Information Manual, known as the FAR/AIM. The FAR/AIM contains a list of FAA, NTSB and TSA regulations applicable to pilots, aircraft operators, air carriers and aircraft mechanics. It is an excellent resource for learning aviation law.

      Study state and local statutes, ordinances and common laws. In addition to the federal regulations, many states, counties and municipalities have laws pertaining to aviation. You can find these laws by going to your state and local government's website and searching for aviation and related terms. Also, you can go to your local government office and request a copy of these laws.

      Take a course on aviation law. Several colleges offer courses on aviation law, and this is an excellent way to gain deeper knowledge of the subject, as well as a better understanding of legal principles and processes in general.
