How to Make Resumes Online for Free thumbnail
Create a free resume online for your job search.

A strong resume plays an essential role in landing an interview when you are searching for a job. Writing and formatting a resume can be tedious and time-consuming, however, there are a few websites that allow you to make your resume online for free. Keep in mind that some websites are specifically for making resumes to copy and paste into an online resume form, and will not be useful if you want a resume you can print or send as an email attachment.

Instructions

    • 1

Browse the Internet for a few different websites that offer free resume creation and compare their templates and services. Check out include ThePCManWebsite.com, HowtoWriteaResume.net and MyMommyBiz.com. Choose a website and follow their free registration instructions. Enter your email address, then go to your email and confirm your registration through the link sent from the website.

    • 2

Search through the different resume templates offered by the website and select one that offers the sections and format you feel will best highlight your experience, education and skills.

    • 3

Enter your name and address, phone number and email address into the form provided by the website for the header of your resume. If necessary, create a new email address specifically for your job search that uses a professional name (such as jimbrown@netmail.com).

    • 4

Enter your degrees and information about the schools you attended, as well as the dates you were there, into the "Education" field. Start with the degree you earned most recently.

    • 5

Enter information about your current and past jobs, including your official title, the company name, the window of time you had the job and a description of your responsibilities in the "Experience" field, beginning with the job you hold now. Be sure to format your "Responsibilities" list similarly; for example, if you use complete sentences for the first, use complete sentences for all.

    • 6

Enter skills or awards you have received into the appropriate fields, which will vary depending on the website and template you chose. Some templates allow you to create sections to highlight things like volunteer history. However, your resume should be no longer than a page, so avoid adding too many extra sections.

    • 7

Select "Preview" and check your resume carefully for mistakes. Each website will offer different file extensions for you to download your resume, typically including PDF, Text or HTML. Choose one based on whether you are printing or emailing your resume (PDF is best for emailing as an attachment, as it is guaranteed to open no matter what software the recipient is running). Select "Download" to download your resume.
