How to Use a 797 SI Humminbird Depth Finder

The Humminbird 797 fish finder may have a somewhat smaller display than other Humminbird finders, but it has nearly all the features as the others: more than a dozen sonar views, way-pointing, screen zooming, alerts and more. A fish finder works by interpreting the return characteristics of a sonar signal. A transducer under the boat sends out the signals, and from the information returned can display many metrics, including the contour of underwater debris, the floor and objects of interest, namely fish. The views display this information as well as the depth, so that finding the depth on a Humminbird 797 fish finder is a simple task.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your Humminbird 797 at the display and press the "View" button, which should bring up the Side Image View.

    • 2

Notice the three numbers at the bottom of the screen. The leftmost number is the speed of your boat, the rightmost number is the water surface temperature and the middle number is the depth in feet.

    • 3

Note that the depth in feet is listed within a large rounded-corner square, and that this number is displayed larger than any other on the screen.

    • 4

Press the "View" button again to switch to the Normal Sonar View. Look for the largest number displayed on this new view, which should be in the top left corner of the view. This number displays the depth as well. Repeat this process of pressing the "View" buttons and looking for the largest number on screen in order to find the depth in any view on your Humminbird 797 fish finder.
