How to Stop Lock Bumping

Lock bumping is also known as "rapping" or "key bumping." The lock bumping technique is normally used by locksmiths to open standard door locks when the homeowners are locked out. Unfortunately, burglars also know this technique---which can put your family and possessions at risk. Lock bumping is more effective in homes with older locks. Homeowners can take preventive steps to stop lock bumping and protect their assets and lives.

Instructions

1. Buy a premium, high-end lock. Expensive locks use complex locking mechanisms, which are not as vulnerable to bumping.

2. Buy and install a slide-bolt lock. Bump keys aren't effective against slide-bolt locks.

3. Use alternative types of locks. For example, magnetic and rotating disk locks, electronic and combination locks are not vulnerable to bump-key burglaries.

4. Install a security system. Adding a security system can keep potential burglars from entering your home.

5. Get a dog. A noisy dog can protect your home from bump-key burglaries.
