How to Align a DeWalt Saw Laser

The DeWalt Adjustable Miter Saw Laser System is a handy tool used by woodworkers and builders to cut accurate miter joints in molding and wood. The laser mounts only to DeWalt miter saws and projects a laser line onto the wood in the location of the miter cut. After installing the DeWalt Adjustable Miter Saw Laser System onto the miter saw, you must adjust the laser line so that it falls on the proper board location.

Things You'll Need

  • DeWalt miter saw
  • 6-inch wide board
  • Locate the miter angle setting on top of the miter saw and set it to 0 degrees. Set the bevel setting, which is next to the miter angle setting, to 0 degrees as well. Turn the saw on and cut a straight line across the end of a 6-inch wide board.

  • Press the rocker switch located on top of the laser to the "On" position.

  • Locate the trigger lock on top of the laser and rotate it downward until it locks into place on the miter saw.

  • Align the perpendicular direction of the laser line by looking at where it hits the end of the board. Insert the hex tool, located in the handle of the miter saw, into the hex-shaped screw hole on top of the laser. Turn the tool one or two degrees and check the laser line again. When properly aligned it should fall directly on the edge of the board.

  • Align the parallel direction of the laser line by inserting the hex tool into the hex-shaped screw hole, located on the front of the laser, and turning it until the laser line runs all the way across the board.

  • Align the laser closer to the saw blade, which is called the Kerf, by lowering the saw all the way down and pushing a board up against the blade as far as it will go. Look through the hole in the bottom of the guard, which is the plastic part that covers the blade, and insert the hex tool into the hex-shaped screw hole. Turn the hex tool until the desired alignment is achieved.

Tips & Warnings

  • The laser only works on the following DeWalt model miter saws, DW713, DW715, DW716, DW717 and DW718.
