A general contractor is an individual or organization that contracts work with other individuals or businesses. The type of work taken on by general contractors typically involves construction, demolition, building remodeling, and other trades. To work as a general contractor in New York you will have to complete the steps necessary to become registered with the state. The registration process consists of supplying the state with necessary documentation and filling out the required paperwork. LLC's, corporations, partnerships and sole proprietors will be required to provide additional information.

      Register with the Buildings Department. Any contractors looking to obtain a New Buildings permit for one, two and three bedroom homes must register with the Buildings Department. The requirements are as follows: must be eighteen years old. Must be able to read and write English, have good moral characters, and be able to perform the duties of a General Contractor.

      Deliver the appropriate documentation to the Department's Licensing Unit in person. Read the LIC6 General Contractor Registration Form for details (see Resources).

      Return to the Department's Licensing Unit after you receive your letter in the mail notifying you that your application has been processed. Upon returning with your letter you will be given your registration card and be required to make the designated payment.
