How to Prevent the Wii Video Game System from Overheating
The Nintendo Wii has changed the way people look at video games, bringing non-gamers and casual players into the fold. With so many new users, some Wii owners may not be used to the best way to keep a video game system in good condition. Like any other game console, the Wii works best if it's used in such a way as to avoid overheating. A Wii that's running hot can be prone to system errors and permanent damage, so it's worth taking precautions to ensure you get the most out of your Wii.

Use a vacuum cleaner, set to low power with a dusting nozzle attached, to clean out the ventilation ports on the back and sides of the system. If you don't have a dusting nozzle for your Wii, a new dry toothbrush can also be used.

Place the Wii in a dry, dust-free environment free from direct sunlight. Don't put the system deep in an electronics cabinet or directly on carpet. Such operating conditions can cause the machine to suck dust, which clogs the cooling mechanisms, leading to overheating.

Ensure the console's vents have free space to take in and expel air. The vents, located on the back and sides of the machine, should be given at least an inch of free space for effective air flow. Don't cram the Wii between games, DVDs or other electronics: The machine needs room to breathe.

Tips & Warnings
While the Wii is designed to self-cool, an extra precaution against overheating can be taken with the purchase of a USB-powered cooling fan. These devices plug into the USB ports of the machine and draw power from the Wii itself to supply a flow of cool air.
