Bike racks are installed and attached to many types of vehicles to transport one or more bicycles when going on a trip. One type of vehicle that you can install a bike rack to is a Jeep. Bike racks are available in a variety of types, such as the Bighorn 4-hitch carrier. You can install a Jeep bike rack by following a few steps in order to properly mount and attach the device to the vehicle.

  • Bike rack
  • Washer
  • Hex Bolts
  • 9/16-inch wrenches
  • Lock washer
  • Large bolt
  • 7/8-inch wrench
  • Safety clip

Instructions

    • 1

      Open the box for the bike rack and separate the various parts. Remove the wire lock and safety pin from the hitch plate.

      Insert the tongue of the bike rack into the hitch plate and align the bolt holes. Place a washer over a hex bolt and insert the bolt into the hole. Place another washer over the bolt and then hand tighten a nut on the bolt.

      Place one 9/16-inch wrench over the head of the bolt and another 9/16-inch wrench over the nut. Turn the wrenches in opposite directions to tighten.

      Insert another hex bolt into the outer bolt hole and then place the bolt sleeve over the nut. Push the bolt through the hole and hand tighten a nut on the end of the bolt. Tighten the nut and bolt with the 9/16-inch wrenches.

      Adjust the pivot tongue of the bike rake to fit over the hitch plate. Align the remaining hole on the hitch plate and insert the safety pin. Place the wire lock over the safety pin.

      Insert the bike rack into the Jeep's hitch. Place the lock washer over the large bolt and insert the bolt into the hole on the receiver. Tighten the bolt with the 7/8-inch wrench.

      Insert the safety clip into the hole on the end of the bolt that is in the receiver. Complete the assembly of the bike rack, if necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • The safety pin and wire lock need to be secured to the bike rack before loading any bikes.
