How to Connect an Actiontec DSL Gateway Modem

Install the Internet on your computer.

Actiontec DSL Gateway modems allow you to connect to the Internet through a wired based connection. You must still order DSL access from a local Internet provider but it is possible to use the Actiontec modem instead of one provided by the Internet company. This is going to save you a rental fee and possibly hundreds of dollars in the long run. The hookup does not differ from any other modem connection so connecting to the Internet takes only a few minutes.

Instructions

1. Plug an Ethernet cable into the wall Ethernet port, then insert the opposite cable into the "Internet" port on the Actiontec modem. If you do not have an Ethernet connection port (typically older homes do not) you may use a phone line to Ethernet adapter. This is provided by the Internet company and inserts directly into the phone line jack in your home. The connection, however, does not take over the phone line so you are still able to make and receive phone calls.

2. Insert the second Ethernet cable into the "Out" port on the modem, then plug the opposite end of the cable into the "In" port on the computer.

3. Power on both the Actiontec DSL Gateway modem and the computer (if they are not on currently) and launch the Internet browser.

4. Type the HTTP address into the URL bar of the Internet modem. The Actiontec activation page appears. Type in "admin" for both the username and password, then choose your own username and password you want to use on the modem. Check off that you are using the modem as a DSL connection and select if you are connecting a wireless modem to the device (you may change this at any time). Click "Save" to activate the DSL modem.
