Paper crafts are popular among many cultures; however, the Japanese have made an art out of using paper; they call this art origami. Origami in Japanese means paper folding, according to origamiwithrachelkatz.com. Paper can be folded to make realistic looking shapes such as insects, dinosaurs and even pocket knives. Making a pocket knife out of paper is not that difficult once you know how to do it; however, if you are just learning it can be a little confusing at first.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a square sheet of paper by folding an 8 ½ by 11 inch piece of paper diagonally. Bring the top right corner of the paper as far down to the left corner of the page as possible while keeping the edges even on the left side. Cut the extra paper from the bottom of the page off with scissors.

    • 2

Fold the square sheet of paper into the shape of a triangle by bringing the top right corner of the paper down to the left bottom corner of the paper. Open the sheet of paper and fold the right half of the paper up to the line in the middle made by the previous fold. Repeat this procedure with the left side of the paper.

    • 3

Fold the widest part of the right flap down approximately one inch, and repeat this on the left side. Fold the edge of the right flap over toward the center of the paper approximately a quarter of an inch. Repeat this on the left side.

    • 4

Turn the paper over so that the back of the paper is facing up and the widest part is at the top. Fold a half-inch flap in the same spot that you folded the quarter-inch flap on the other side of the paper, and repeat on the other side of the page.

    • 5

Fold the left half of the paper to the middle of the page, and fold the right half of the paper to the middle also. Fold the small triangle at the bottom of the page up and underneath the two side flaps. Fold the top tip of the paper down approximately half an inch, and fold the sides of it in so that it forms a sharp point. Fold the two flaps together so that the piece of paper is folded in half lengthwise.

Tips & Warnings

  • To put the paper blade "away," undo the last fold and fold the paper in half by bringing the top half down towards the bottom. Fold the paper in half again lengthwise.

  • Using a sheet of colored paper that is plain white on the backside will help to make the knife look more realistic when it is finished.
