Many children are fascinated with pirate culture. From adventure on the Seven Seas to a parrot on his or her shoulder, many young boys and girls would love to step onto a pirate ship, if even for a day. One of the most importantl parts on any good pirate's arsenal of tools is a telescope to see the stars and any rivals that may be attempting to plunder their treasure. Things You'll Need

  • Small paper cup
  • Black paint
  • 2 small paint brushes
  • Paper towel tube
  • Purple paint
  • Utility knife
  • Clear tape
  • Colored cellophane
  • Scissors
  • Black construction paper
  • Glue
  • Markers
  • Glitter
  • Stickers

Instructions

      Paint a small paper cup black with a small paint brush. Allow the paper cup to dry.

      Paint an empty paper towel tube purple with a small paint brush. Allow the tube to dry.

      Cut out the bottom of the small paper cup with a utility knife.

      Place the paper cup onto a flat surface, such as a table, with the bottom side facing up.

      Place a paper towel tube approximately one half inch though the hole. Secure the tube to the cup with clear tape.

      Cut a 3-inch square of colored cellophane with a pair of scissors. The edges of the cellophane do not need to be cut neatly.

      Place the cellophane piece over the top edge of the paper cup. Secure the cellophane with a piece of clear tape.

      Cut out a strip of black construction paper that is about one half 1/2-inch wide and will fit the circumference of the paper cup.

      Wrap the black construction paper ring around the paper cup at the point where the cellophane is taped down. Secure the two ends of the construction paper together tightly with a dab of glue. The paper ring will help hide the unfinished edge of the cellophane.

      Allow the children to decorate the pirate telescope with markers, glitter and stickers.
