How to Talk to Elderly Parents
Talking to your elderly parents may be difficult because they may have trouble accepting that they need help. However, you need to voice your concerns and a decision needs to be made to ensure that they stay healthy and safe. When talking to your parents, be sure to be as open and honest as possible to help them understand your concerns.

Pick a specific time and place where you will not be interrupted. Talking to your parents about all your concerns will take time and patience.

Keep in mind all the possible feelings your parents may be feeling. They may be in denial, scared, anxious, or even relieved. Try stating your concerns as questions. This approach will help your parents feel involved in the decision making process concerning their future.

Talk about one issue at a time. When one issue is resolved, talk to your parents about your second concern.

If your have been unsuccessful having meaningful conversations. Have a family friend or a religious figure help you talk to them. Do not try this the first time. They may be able to help validate your concerns.

Do not try to change or address something that is not absolutely necessary. Focus on what is important: their health and their safety. Try not to compare your elderly parents to when they were younger. They will not be as motivated as when they were younger; their cleaning habits, their exercise habits, and their sleeping habits may change.
