How to Make Jewelery From Fishing Line

Use fishing line and beads to make fun jewelry.

Next time you are looking for a fun activity to do with the kids, consider making jewelry with fishing line. Fishing line can be used to hold a variety of beads and other jewelry-making items. The line is easily cut to length so that a necklace, bracelet or anklet can be made and sized as needed.

Things You'll Need

• Fishing line (10 pound test or heavier)
• Sharp scissors
• Beads
• Jewelry clasp

Instructions

1. Select a diameter of fishing line that will support the beads you've chosen. Typically, a line in the 10-pound test range will be strong enough for a necklace or bracelet. Heavier test lines such as 20-pound test or higher can also be used, but they are more difficult to work with.

2. Determine the length of line you will need based on the length of the necklace and whether it will be used as a bracelet or anklet. Add 8 to 10 inches to the overall length you'll need--this will provide extra line for attaching a clasp.

3. Select beads and other jewelry items that have a hole and are designed to be used on a necklace, bracelet or anklet. Consider beads made from metal, plastic, stone, glass and other materials. Letters and charms in sport, religious, animal and other shapes can add detail and dimension to the project.

4. Begin assembling the jewelry by sliding the selected beads and other items onto the line. Do not completely fill the line as you will need to save room for attaching a clasp. A rule of thumb is to only fill the line half way with beads and other items.

5. Attach a jewelry clasp to one end of the line with a double-over hand knot. Slide the clasp into the desired position. Pull the free end of the line across and around the main line, forming a loop next to the clasp. Feed the free end through the loop above the clasp and pull tight. Tie a second over-hand knot to form a double-over hand.

   Cut excess line from the free end with scissors.

6. Attach a metal loop or ring to the opposite end of the line for the clasp to connect. Once again, use a double-over hand knot to secure the metal loop or ring in place. Adjust the loop near the beads as necessary to determine the overall length of the jewelry.

Tips & Warnings

• Design a bracelet or necklace with a theme in mind. Use beads in colors that represent birth stones and charms that represent accomplishments or activities participated in. Customize the jewelry to tell a personal story.

• Use caution when working with fishing line especially when it is stretched tight. It is possible to recieve a cut or abrasion especially to finger tips and joints.
