How to Alter a Vinyl Raincoat
Getting a custom fit from your favorite vinyl raincoat can help keep moisture off your body while fashionably fitting over your clothing. Altering a vinyl raincoat to fit a smaller size is easier than tailoring it for larger measurements, since you likely have to add fabric, but it can still be done with style. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the person who will be wearing the altered rain coat. Note arm (length and circumference), neck, shoulder-to-shoulder, neck-to-waist, waist, hips and waist-to knee or waist-to-calf measurements.
-
2
Use the measuring tape to find the appropriate measurements on the areas of the raincoat that will be altered. Place hash marks along the fabric with chalk to note the location for the new seams.

3
Remove the current seam using scissors or a seam-ripper. Be careful not to cut any fabric while removing the seams.
-
4
Load thread that is a close match to the current seam thread into your sewing machine. Turn your raincoat inside out, and sew a new seam along the chalk marks. Make sure you stay on your marks so that you won't have to remove the new seam and start over.

5
Check the fit on the person who will be wearing it. If your alteration goals are accomplished, take your scissors and trim away any excess vinyl material from the inside. If it still needs a bit of mending, go back to Step 1.

Tips & Warnings
Adding 1 1/2 inches to your measurements will give you leeway in case you need it.
Measure the wearer when they are wearing clothing that is close in thickness to the clothes they anticipate wearing under the raincoat. You need to allow enough room for sweaters to fit underneath.
