How to Make a Fashionable Handbag From a Sketch
Purses, handbags and totes are often made by crafts persons and seamstresses. First the creator sketches out the fashionable handbag she would like to make, then she develops a pattern. Often, bag creators begin their hobby by trying a few free patterns online until they have a good understanding of how to put the pieces together. Usually they also locate a good handbag resource that sells all kinds of hardware for the bags.

1
Place your initial sketch on a bulletin board or other visible spot for easy reference. Tape graph paper to your work table and plot out your handbag shape. The graph will allow you to keep things straight and the same from side to side. Draw the front, back, sides, bottom and straps. If you use commercial handles you may not need straps.

2
Trace your pattern onto tracing paper and label each piece with a marker. Include 1/4-inch seam allowance. Cut out your pattern pieces with scissors. Pin the pattern to the handbag fabric and cut out the pieces. Usually the liner uses the same pattern as the outer bag, simply reversed.

3
Sew your handbag together by placing right sides together, then sewing. Construct the body of the handbag first. Construct the liner body next. Sew the liner and handbag together. If you create interior pockets, they should be sewn into the lining.

4
Attach any straps or handles. Most straps and handles are sewn between the main fabric and the liner. Attach any accessories like zippers, snaps, buckles, ties or other features. Finish with any hand sewn-details or finishing touches.
-
5
Stuff your finished handbag with clean paper so it will hold its shape. Do not stack handbags on top of each other, as this can make their form collapse.
